QIT Red Dust 1.2

I filled the cracks (crazing) with ink.

QIT stands for Quebec Iron and Titanium. QIT owns an ilmenite mine in northeastern Quebec.

The ore is shipped to Tracy where it is processed into titanium dioxide slags, iron, steel billets

and steel autoparts. This dust comes from the dust collecting system of the steelmelting department

and has the following general formula:

FE2O3 85%

SIO2 5.0%

CAO 5.0%

MGO 1.0%

ZNO 2.0%

CARBON 2.0%

TOTAL 100%

It was 170 mesh sieved.

A theoritical substitution is as follows for each 1% of the stuff :

Red Iron Oxide 0.820

Silica 0.050

Whiting 0.060

Dolomite 0.050

Zinc oxide 0.020

Iron Red

Iron Red

This is the IROR3 orange red from Michael Bailey's Oriental Glazes book.

Nuka/Kaki

Nuka/Kaki

I like this version of nuka over kaki- lots of movement where t he
glaze thickness varies.

Lee's Ash test

Lee's Ash test

Hi Lee-
This is a test of the "adjusted for NA formula" using oak ash washed
once- it seems to move more than your
real glaze, and not to be quite as transparent. Has a definite green
cast. This is over a 6T slip, on my regular clay
which doesn't have much iron.

Petrified Wood

Petrified Wood

WoW I found this
block of petrified
wood yesterday while
mining kaolinite deposits.
The minerals that replaced
the wood must derive entirely
from the clay/mica/spar/silica
or whatever. At first I thought
it was a good sized block of clay
since it was about the same color as.

Drips-as-decoration

Drips-as-decoration

Yes I use drips as
decorations. I've
never used a sprayer.
I hear that pouring
used to be a common
way to glaze but is
not used too much
anymore. Some of this
is done with the slip
trailing tool, some
with the glaze pitcher.

One of the important things I experienced during my apprenticeship with Tatsuzo Shimaoka, is being exposed to the variety of effects you can get, both from applied ash glazing and from fly ash and charcoal intoduction into the woodkiln. These bottles are fired in the firemouth (Dogima) of his noborigama.
